Energy Price Cap
Between 1 April and 30 June 2025, the energy price cap is set at £1,849 per year for a typical household who use electricity and gas and pay by Direct Debit. This is a 6.4% increase from the previous price cap. Here are the rates: Electricity: Unit Rate of 27.03p per kWh, Standing Charge of 53.80p per day. Carbon Monoxide (CO)
CO is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon fuels like natural gas or LPG, especially when gas appliances are incorrectly fitted, poorly maintained, or if flues and vents are blocked. CO is invisible, tasteless, and odourless, making it extremely dangerous as it can't be detected without special equipment.
Symptoms of CO poisoning resemble flu or food poisoning, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, and loss of consciousness. Additional signs include symptoms that appear at home and disappear elsewhere and similar symptoms among household members, including pets.
When checking gas appliances, it's important to look for warning signs that they may not be working properly: Flame Colour: The flame on gas appliances should be a crisp blue. A lazy yellow or orange flame suggests incomplete combustion. Black Marks or Stains: Can indicate that combustion is not occurring properly. Excessive Condensation: If there's too much condensation in the room, especially around windows, this could be a sign of poor ventilation and potential carbon monoxide buildup.
If CO poisoning is suspected, it's crucial to get fresh air immediately, open doors and windows, turn off gas appliances, and seek medical attention. CO displaces oxygen in the bloodstream, leading to tissue damage and, in severe cases, death.
To prevent CO poisoning, it's important to have gas appliances checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer and install audible CO alarms as a secondary line of defence. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed as per manufacturer guidelines and tested regularly, ensuring they meet relevant safety standards. Smart Meters
Automatically send your energy usage data to your supplier, ensuring accurate billing based on the energy you've used. You can easily arrange installation by contacting your supplier. Fuel Vouchers
If you are struggling to top up your payment meter and are at risk of disconnection, you may be able to get a fuel voucher. Vouchers are issued in the form of a code in an email or text message that can be redeemed at a local convenience store (signed up to Paypoint) or Post Office (signed up with Payzone). In order to qualify for a fuel voucher you will need to receive a referral from a local specified organisation in your area such as ourselves, food banks, or the local council. Eligibility criteria apply and evidence will be required for an application, the Fuel Bank Foundation will only issue one voucher per household to help them in a time of crisis.
Tariff Check
Speak with your energy provider to check that you are on the most affordable tariff or whether you can make any savings by changing your method of payment (such as from quarterly bills to direct debit. You can also check online using comparison websites to see if other suppliers can offer a cheaper tariff. You will need to know details of your current supplier and tariff, usage and costs, to get the most accurate comparison to see if you can save, this is commonly found on your bills or could be in an app or online account with your supplier.
